Saturday weather gets exciting as the day progresses

Saturday starts dry then the rain and the strong wind from the south arrive in the afternoon. The wind is picking up which could mean gusts of up to 50-60 mph on the coast. A severe wind warning goes into effect Saturday afternoon for the entire Oregon Coast. Wind gusts overnight Saturday evening could also reach 35 mph in the Willamette Valley.

Snow levels rise to nearly 6,000′ before dropping below pass level early Sunday morning with the arrival of a cold front. Ski resorts can pick up up to a foot or more of snow on Sunday.

WHAT… Snow forecast above 3000 feet. Total snow accumulation 7 to 14 inches. Winds blowing up to 40 mph.

WHERE… In Oregon, North Oregon Waterfalls and Lane County Waterfalls. In Washington, South Washington Cascades.

WHEN… Saturday 7:00 p.m. PST to Sunday 5:00 p.m. PDT.

IMPACTS… Traveling over the passes will sometimes be difficult.

Strong wind warning

STRONG WIND WARNING IN EFFECT FROM 2 PM PST SATURDAY TO 5 AM PDT SUNDAY NEAR THE BEACHES AND THE CAPS.

WHAT… Southerly winds of 30-40 mph with gusts up to 60 mph expected near beaches and headlands.

WHERE…North Oregon Coast.

WHEN… Saturday 2:00 p.m. PST to Sunday 5:00 a.m. PDT.

IMPACTS… Destructive winds will bring down trees and power lines. Widespread power cuts are expected. Travel will be difficult, especially for prestige vehicles.

ADDITIONAL DETAILS… A period of strong southerly winds will blow ahead of a cold front Saturday afternoon. A second wave of strong southwest winds will occur late Saturday evening.

PRECAUTIONARY MEASURES/PREPARATION… People should avoid being outdoors in wooded areas and around trees and branches. If possible, stay on the lower levels of your home during the storm and avoid windows. Be careful if you have to drive.

THE GALE WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT FROM 10 AM PST SATURDAY TO 11 AM PDT SUNDAY.

WHAT… For the gale warning, SW winds 30 to 40 kt gusting up to 45 kt and seas 19 to 24 feet at 15 seconds expected.

WHERE… Coastal Waters of Cape Shoalwater WA to Cascade Head OR 10 NM, Coastal Waters of Cascade Head to Florence OR 10 NM, Waters of Cape Shoalwater WA to Cascade Head OR 10 to 60 NM and Waters of Cascade Head to Florence OR from 10 to 60 NM.

WHEN… Gale warning, from 10:00 a.m. PST Saturday to 11:00 a.m. PDT Sunday. Notice to small craft, midnight tonight until 10:00 a.m. PST Saturday.

IMPACTS… Strong winds will cause dangerous seas which could capsize or damage vessels and reduce visibility.

ADDITIONAL DETAILS… A period of strong southerly winds will occur before a cold front from mid Saturday morning until late afternoon. Then, behind the front, a second wave of strong westerly winds is likely from Saturday evening to Sunday.
