Kye Moffat, 25, died in a skiing accident while skiing with friends in Palisades Tahoe on April 23. The lifelong skier grew up in the Tahoe area. Moffat then played college football for four years at Middlebury College before returning to the San Francisco Bay Area. Moffat’s magnetic personality, kindness and taste for adventure are well captured in this tribute to the Piedmontese exedra.
Moriah Wilson, 26, of East Burke, VT, died of a gunshot wound May 11 in Austin, TX, as reported in Velonews. Wilson attended Burke Mountain Academy and skied for Dartmouth College. After graduating in 2019, she focused her athletic talent on pro cycling, dominating the gravel tour while working full-time for Specialized. Wilson was in Austin preparing for the Gravel Locos competition.
Ski Racing Media offers its deepest condolences to the wide and deep circle of family and friends affected by Moffat and Wilson. We will update this story as information becomes available on how to support families.
The Wilson family released the following statement on Friday afternoon:
We thank everyone for their expressions of love and support for us during this difficult time. While Moriah’s tragic loss is unfathomable, at the same time, we want everyone to join us in celebrating his life, his accomplishments, and his love for others. Always pushing relentlessly to achieve her goals, we knew she was pursuing what she loved. We will miss her terribly and know that we all mourn her with us.
Moriah is known to want the event to go ahead for her compatriots to test their limits, as she would have been alongside her friends at the racetrack. We hope everyone feels their passion and support as they pursue their own dreams. His spirit will be there with all of you, during training and every race day.
Please do not request interviews or comments during the remainder of May. We are planning a celebration of life in June and will let you know the details soon.
